Penn State IKS Talk Series One: “Formulating Complainability and Constructing Social Identities and Relations in Complaining Activity” by Kyung-Eun Yoon

Kyung-Eun Yoon will be presenting the ideas from her book, Complaining as a Sociocultural Activity. This presentation will first examine how Korean speakers formulate complainability to convince the addressees. It will then explore how the participants construct various social identities and relationships in the particular settings. The talk will shed light on the complex aspects of the complaining activity in Korean interaction.

Kyung-Eun Yoon is senior lecturer and coordinator in Korean at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her research interests are conversation analysis, discourse analysis, and language pedagogy. Her publications include several book chapters and many articles appearing in journals such as Journal of Pragmatics, Journal of Linguistics, Studies in Language, and Korean Language in America, and a book titled, Complaining as a Sociocultural Activity: Examining How and Why in Korean Interaction.
