Language Proficiency Exams

Non-credit foreign language proficiency certification (Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Cantonese) may be used to satisfy Penn State’s foreign language requirements.

The request form for proficiency testing is to be submitted to the Asian Studies Department with the $60 fee paid through the Language Proficiency site before the examination is administered. Exam dates are posted on the Asian Studies website.

Proficiency Exam Dates

Chinese Exam Dates: The Chinese non-credit proficiency exams will be administered online on the following dates. To register for an exam, please FIRST read the Exam Application Instructions (located on the bottom of the current page) very carefully. To successfully sign up for an exam, students MUST strictly follow the Exam Application Instructions.

Exam 1: Thursday, 9/30 at 8-10 pm (EST). Registration closes at 4 pm on Friday, 09/24 (EST).
Exam 2: Wednesday, 10/27 at 9-11 am (EST). Registration closes at 4 pm on Friday, 10/22 (EST).
Exam 3: Tuesday, 11/30 at 8-10 pm (EST). Registration closes at 4 pm on Friday, 11/26 (EST).

Korean Exam Dates: The Korean non-credit proficiency exams will be administered online on the following dates. To register for an exam, please FIRST read Exam Application Instructions which is located on the bottom of the current page. To successfully sign up for an exam, students MUST strictly follow Exam Application Instructions.

Exam 1: Wednesday 9/29 at 4:30 – 6:00 pm (EST). Registration closes at 4 pm on Friday, 9/24  (EST)

Exam 2: Monday 10/25 at 5:00 – 6:30 pm (EST). Registration closes at 4 pm on Thursday, 10/21 (EST)

Exam 3: Wednesday 11/10 at 4:30 – 6:00 pm (EST). Registration closes at 4 pm on Friday, 11/5 (EST)

Hindi and Bengali Exam Dates: Fall 2021 Hindi and Bengali proficiency exams will be held on Sep 17, Oct 22, and Nov 19 from 10:30-12:00. The oral part (speaking, reading, and comprehension) will be held on Zoom, and the written part of the exam will be done by email. Students will be sent a Hindi text and accompanying questions based on the reading after they complete the oral interview. The students will then have one hour to write the answers to the questions.
