Language Proficiency Exams

Non-credit foreign language proficiency certification (Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Cantonese) may be used to satisfy Penn State’s foreign language requirements.

The request form for proficiency testing is to be submitted to the Asian Studies Department with the $60 fee paid through the Language Proficiency site before the examination is administered. Exam dates are posted on the Asian Studies website.

Proficiency Exam Dates

Chinese Exam Dates: The Chinese non-credit proficiency exams will be administered online on the following dates. To register for an exam, please FIRST read the Exam Application Instructions (located on the bottom of the current page) very carefully. To successfully sign up for an exam, students MUST strictly follow the Exam Application Instructions.

Exam 1: Tuesday, Feb. 08 at 1-3pm (EST), registration closes at 4pm on Friday, Feb. 04 (EST).

Exam 2: Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 9-11am (EST), registration closes at 4pm on Friday, Mar. 04 (EST).

Exam 3: Thursday, Apr. 14 at 8-10pm (EST), registration closes at 4pm on Tuesday, Apr. 12 (EST).

Please note: students who plan to graduate in Summer 2022 MUST complete the exam during the Spring 2022 semester if the exam is required for your graduation. NO Chinese proficiency exams will be administered during summer sessions.

 

Korean Exam Dates: The Korean non-credit proficiency exams will be administered online on the following dates. To register for an exam, please FIRST read Exam Application Instructions which is located on the bottom of the current page. To successfully sign up for an exam, students MUST strictly follow Exam Application Instructions. 

Exam 1: 2/23 Wednesday at 4:30-6:00pm (EST). Registration closes at 4pm on 2/18 Friday (EST).

Exam 2: 3/28 Monday at 4:30-6:00pm (EST). Registration closes at 4pm on 3/24 Thursday (EST).

Exam 3: 4/25 Monday at 4:30-6:00pm (EST). Registration closes at 4pm on 4/21 Thursday (EST).

Hindi and Bengali Exam Dates: 

The Hindi Proficiency exam dates for Spring 2022 are:
 
Feb 16, 4:00-5:00 pm
March 23, 4:00-5:00 pm
April 20, 4:00-5:00 pm
 
The oral part of the exam (reading, speaking and comprehension) will be conducted online.
The written part will be done by email. Examiner will send the readings and accompanying questions to the students, and the students will then have to respond to those questions in writing (in Devnagari) and return these within a specified time frame.
