Initiatives and Institutes

Global Asias Initiative

Sponsored by Penn State’s Department of Asian Studies and the College of the Liberal Arts, the Global Asias Initiative (GAI) encompasses several projects that relate, but not necessarily align, work in Asian studies, Asian American studies, and Asian Diaspora studies. This initiative cultivates multi-disciplinary collaboration through the work of an award-winning journal, Verge: Studies in Global Asias; the biennial Global Asias conference; and the annual Global Asias Summer Institute.

South Asian Studies @ Penn State

The South Asian Studies Initiative (SASI) represents the intellectual and regional interests of faculty, students, and the Penn State community who engage in the history, politics, governance, languages, and cultures of South Asia. This includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. SASI organizes regular programming related to South Asia, including our monthly speaker series, which features cutting edge research from national and international scholars, and a biannual book club. SASI supports the South Asian Studies minor and is sponsored by the Department of Asian Studies, with some funding from the Center for Global Studies.”

Korean Institute

Penn State’s Institute for Korean Studies (IKS), founded in January 2021 with a generous grant from The Academy of Korean Studies, is a community of University researchers who are committed to developing and strengthening the research and education on Korean society, language, and culture.
